Advocacy Group Calls For Closure Of Tuscaloosa Center

Montgomery, AL – The Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Program has called for the shutdown of the W.D. Partlow Developmental Center in Tuscaloosa, saying conditions there are deplorable.

The group said its 12-month investigation found that up to $23 million in taxpayer money is being wasted each year.

The advocacy organization wants the center shut down by next October and better living conditions provided immediately for the 200 residents at the center.

A spokesman for the Alabama Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation said the agency will respond to the report shortly.
