Splenda Plant Settles Complaint With Ala. Residents

Mobile, AL – A lawsuit accusing the company that makes Splenda of noise pollution from a factory in McIntosh has been settled before going to trial.

More than two dozen Washington County residents sued Tate & Lyle in 2006, accusing the company's nearby factory of disrupting their lives with noxious odors and excessive noise. A federal judge dismissed odor allegations last week and urged lawyers to resolve the remaining differences over the noise.

The Press-Register reported Tuesday that the case was settled prior to Monday's federal court trial, but terms of the agreement were not released.

A message left with John Robert Parker, an attorney for the homeowners, and William Baldwin Charles, a spokesman for the plant, wasn't immediately returned Tuesday.
