Gulf Shores, AL – The Gulf Shores City Council has voted to layoff more than 20 people from city government at the end of the year.
Mayor Robert Kraft says cutbacks include 40 positions some already vacant and about 21 people now in full-time jobs. He says there will be cuts in the police and fire departments, but they will be cut the least.
Kraft says a drop in sales tax collections in the beachfront city is partly to blame because construction has come to a halt during the economic slowdown.
Kraft says the revenue lag isn't just merchandise sales, but also building materials and construction materials.
