White Powder On Ala. Mail Bag Not Dangerous

Montgomery, AL – Alabama's public safety director says a white powdery substance found on a mail bag at the state government mail room in downtown Montgomery was not anything dangerous.

Workers noticed suspicious powder on the mail bag shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday. State Public Safety Director Christopher Murphy said the mail bag may have accidentally touched some type of white powder rather than it being intentional.

Murphy says the mail bag appears unrelated to a white powder letter sent to Gov. Bob Riley and the governors in several other states on Monday from Dallas. That powder also turned out to be harmless.

Both incidents caused disruptions in the Capitol complex because fire trucks, emergency crews and hazardous materials teams were called out. Murphy said the response Wednesday was appropriate because no one wants to take a report lightly and then have someone injured.
