Montgomery, AL – Leaders of the state Senate's Republican Caucus say their priority for the upcoming legislative session is to phase out the state sales tax on groceries.
The GOP leaders say they want to phase out the 4 percent sales tax over four years. But they want to do it without raising other taxes.
A Democratic plan that nearly passed in May would have repealed the grocery tax, but it would have replaced the revenue by requiring some Alabamians to pay higher income taxes.
The Senate Republican Caucus will also try to ban the transfer of money between political action committees and end annual property tax reappraisals of homes.
The next legislative session starts Feb. 3.
