State Supreme Court Stays Riley Request in A&M Suit

By Associated Press

Montgomery, AL – The Alabama Supreme Court has reconsidered and granted Gov. Bob Riley's request for an emergency order in a dispute over his appointment of four Alabama A&M University trustees.

The high court granted Riley's request in a Monday order. Riley wants to block Montgomery County Circuit Judge William Shashy's Sept. 19 order in a lawsuit challenging the appointments.

Shashy disqualified Riley's board appointments after they had been rejected by the state Senate's Confirmations Committee in May.

Riley wanted Shashy's order blocked so the four trustees could participate in board meetings.

His office said Monday that the governor was pleased with the court's unanimous ruling and now allows "a much needed board meeting" to take place.
