Atmore, AL – Alabama death row inmate James Harvey Callahan faces lethal injection at 6 p.m. Thursday for the 1982 murder of a Jacksonville woman.
Callahan's attorneys hope the U.S. Supreme Court will halt the execution at Holman Prison near Atmore. They filed for a stay of execution Wednesday. State prosecutors say Callahan's appeals have been exhausted.
Callahan, now 62, was twice convicted for the Feb. 3, 1982, slaying of Rebecca Suzanne Howell, who was abducted from a coin-operated laundry. The body of the 26-year-old Jacksonville State University student was found weeks later, dumped in a creek. Records show she died from suffocation.
