Mobile, AL – The chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, Rep. John Murtha, visited Mobile on Thursday for a sales pitch from the governor and others.
Gov. Bob Riley said the visit went well and Murtha was impressed by economic development in Mobile.
Alabama Reps. Jo Bonner and Artur Davis arranged the visit so Murtha could discuss the military tanker refueling project with business and community leaders.
Davis said he and Bonner have been making the case for why Mobile is the best city and Northrop Grumman/EADS is the best team to build the aerial tanker. The Boeing Co. is also competing for the $35 billion project.
The Air Force selected Northrop Grumman/EADS for the aerial tanker project last year, but then it reopened the bidding after the Government Accounting Office found flaws with the decision.
