Prosecutors Attempt To Seize Schmitz' Assets

Decatur, AL – Former state Rep. Sue Schmitz returns to court on April 1 as the federal government attempts to seize her assets to repay taxpayers $177,000.

Federal prosecutors say that's the money she made from a sham job in the state two-year college system. She was convicted of fraud in federal court in Decatur last month after being accused of using her influence as a legislator to get the job and then doing little or no work.

U.S. District Judge David Proctor on Wednesday turned down Schmitz' motion for a new trial.

U.S. Attorney Alice Martin said Friday that prosecutors may try later through civil action to force Schmitz to forfeit another $177,000 in back pay the state has been ordered to pay her.
