Montgomery, AL – Action stalled in the Alabama House this week as separate protests by Republicans and some Democrats kept most bills from passing.
Republicans used procedural votes to keep bills from coming up for debate. House Minority Leader Rep. Mike Hubbard of Auburn said Thursday the GOP members were upset that Democratic leaders have not placed bills sponsored by Republicans on the work agenda.
At the same time, the House Black Caucus caucus and some white Democrats have used delaying tactics to slow consideration of most bills to protest votes by Republican lawmakers that have prevented debate on a bill to remove the state sales tax from groceries.
Democratic House Speaker Seth Hammett of Andalusia said he is negotiating with leaders of both protests.
