Bids Opened On First Ala. Highway Stimulus Projects

Montgomery, AL – The state Transportation Department has opened bids on the first round of road projects funded by the federal stimulus package.

The largest of the 10 projects was the rehabilitation of nearly 11 miles of Interstate 59 in Etowah County. The low bid for work on the concrete highway was $37.5 million from Hinkle Contracting Corp. in Paris, Ky.

The second largest project was resurfacing and striping of more than six miles of Alabama Highway 38 in Shelby County. The low bid of $5.7 million came from Dunn Construction Co. in Birmingham.

The other projects were in Baldwin, Houston, Colbert, Dale, Clarke, Jackson, Limestone and Marion counties.

Alabama's Transportation Department is getting $417 million from the stimulus package.
