Sanford Wins in North Alabama GOP Runoff to Replace Griffith

By Associated Press

Huntsville, AL – The candidates have now been chosen in the race to fill U.S. Rep. Parker Griffin's seat in the state legislature.

Restaurateur Paul Sanford has scored a solid win over attorney Sam Givhan in a Republican primary runoff for a state Senate seat.

Sanford will face state Rep. Laura Hall, who won the Democratic primary for the Senate seat. The election will take place on June 9.

Givhan was the leader after the first round with 30 percent of the vote to Sanford's 23 percent. On Tuesday, with 56 of 57 precincts reporting, Sanford had about 60 percent of the vote.

Hall was one of only two Democratic candidates and easily defeated Alabama A&M graduate student Anthony Daniels in the primary.

The winner will succeed Democrat Parker Griffith of Huntsville, who won a congressional seat last November.
