Gov. Riley Vetoes Bill Allowing Small Towns To Go Wet

Montgomery, AL – Gov. Bob Riley has vetoed a bill that would allow towns with populations as small as 1,000 residents in dry counties to vote to legalize the sale of alcoholic beverages.

Riley vetoed the bill Tuesday night. The House and Senate are expected to vote Thursday on whether to override the governor's veto. Riley said he feels the bill is unconstitutional because it deals with two different issues in the same legislation.

That second issue is a provision that would allow some restaurants in Shelby County to continue to sell alcoholic beverages on Sundays. A new Alcoholic Beverage Control Board rule says restaurants can no longer justify Sunday liquor sales by operating as a retail restaurant during the week and a private club on Sunday.
