Rep. Bentley Joins Gubernatorial Race

By Associated Press

Montgomery, AL – State Rep. Robert Bentley of Tuscaloosa is running for the Republican nomination for governor.

Bentley will officially announce his Wednesday and Thursday in a series of news conferences during a bus tour across the state. He says he is paying for the bus tour with his own money.

Bentley is a Tuscaloosa dermatologist and is the only medical doctor in the Legislature.

He is seeking to become the first physician in the Alabama governor's office since Lt. Gov. Russell Cunningham spent almost a year as acting governor in 1904 and 1905.

The 66-year-old Bentley has represented Tuscaloosa County in the Alabama House since 2002. He said his experience as a physician has helped him understand the problems facing Alabama residents.
