Montgomery, AL – A Montgomery teacher who moved to the United States at age 6 as a Vietnam War refugee and encourages students to overcome adversities has been named Alabama's teacher of the year.
State Superintendent of Education Joe Morton announced that Yung Thi Bui-Kincer, who teachers science at Booker T. Washington Magnet School in Montgomery, was named Teacher of the Year during an awards ceremony Wednesday honoring 16 district finalists.
Bui-Kincer, an Auburn Montgomery graduate, hopes her story inspires students by showing that education opens doors.
She automatically becomes the state's nominee for national teacher of the year. One elementary and one secondary teacher from each of the eight state Board of Education districts were selected from 141 teachers nominated.
