Montgomery, AL – Two-year college Chancellor Bradley Byrne has submitted a letter of resignation to members of the State Board of Education.
Byrne told presidents of the state's community colleges in a letter Monday that his resignation will be effective August 31, or sooner if a replacement is found earlier.
The former Republican state senator from Baldwin County left the Legislature to take over the system in 2007. Since then he has backed policies and changes to guard against the corruption and nepotism scandals that had rocked the system.
Byrne is considered a likely candidate for governor in 2010 and is expected to make an announcement on his plans soon. He said in the letter that his intention is ``to take the reform fight to another arena.''
