Delphi Plant In Athens To Close After 35 Years

Athens, AL – A union official has confirmed that the last day of production at Delphi Saginaw Steering System's plant in Athens will be June 26.

United Auto Worker President Vaughn Goodwin said a small decommissioning crew will stay longer to disconnect machines and clean up.

More than 2,000 people worked at Delphi's Athens operations before the company filed for bankruptcy in 2005. Spokesman David Barnas said Monday that there are 439 employees at the Athens plants.

The first plant of a three-plant automotive operation at Athens opened in 1975.
