State to Give Out $12.2M in Stimulus-funded Grants

Birmingham, AL – State transportation officials say they will give out $12.2 million in stimulus-funded grants to 10 Alabama airports by Sept. 30, including $3.5 million to the Montgomery Airport to resurface and improve lighting on its main runway.

John Eagerton IV, chief of the Aeronautics Bureau of the Alabama Department of Transportation, said the projects were shovel-ready.

Stimulus-funded projects for runway rehabilitation or lighting include Tuscaloosa Regional Airport, $580,000; Ashland/Lineville Airport in Clay County, $762,209; Camden Municipal Airport, $1 million; Dauphin Island Airport, $750,000; Northeast Alabama Regional Airport at Gadsden, $374,593; Northwest Alabama Regional Airport at Muscle Shoals, $1.3 million; Vaiden Airport at Marion, $1.2 million; George Downer Airport at Aliceville, $1.7 million.

A $1 million grant will be used to make improvements at the Mobile Regional Airport terminal.
