US Attorney Says She'll Resign Effective Friday

Birmingham, AL – U.S. Attorney Alice Martin of Birmingham says she is sending her resignation to Washington and will step aside on Friday.

The U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Alabama said she told her staff Tuesday morning. She said she is crafting her resignation letter to send to Washington.

Martin, who prosecuted some of the biggest public corruption cases in Alabama history, has been at the helm of the U.S. attorney's office for the past eight years. Martin successfully prosecuted abortion clinic bomber Eric Robert Rudolph and several Jefferson County and state public officials.

She was nominated shortly after 9/11 by President George W. Bush.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to vote on Martin's successor, Joyce Vance, on Thursday.
