Ala. Pre-K Program Grows To 213 Classrooms

Montgomery, AL – More Alabama classrooms are getting grants to offer the state's First Class Pre-K program.

Gov. Bob Riley announced Tuesday that 27 classrooms have been selected to become sites and the total number of children being served by program will increase to 3,808.

Fifteen of the sites are receiving $45,000 Pre-K Excellence Grants and the rest will get at least that plus additional funding based on the number of low-income and middle-income children served.

Sixteen of the new sites are in public schools, eight are with private child care or faith-based organizations, and three are current Head Start programs.

There are now a total of 213 First Class Pre-K classrooms in the state.

Alabama's Pre-K standards are rated the best in the nation by the National Institute for Early Education Research.
