Gov. Riley Expects Cuts In New General Fund Budget

Montgomery, AL – Gov. Bob Riley says declining state revenue means he will likely have to cut appropriations to state agencies when the new state General Fund budget takes effect Oct. 1.

Speaking Thursday in Hoover, Riley did not specify the size of any cuts.

If the cuts occur, fiscal 2010 will mark the second consecutive year that most agencies haven't received their full appropriations due to the recession.

The executive director of the Alabama State Employees Association, Mac McArthur, says the new fiscal year looks gloomy, and he expects the governor to continue a freeze on state hiring.
