Jackson, AL – Construction of a wood pellet plant expected to create 100 jobs in Jackson is being stalled as builders struggle to raise $118 million.
Clarke County Economic Development Partnership director Debra Bolen says the project is still happening - but construction has been delayed as builders search for financing.
New Gas Concepts Inc. announced its plans in February 2008.
The plant would make 600,000 tons of pellets a year from sawdust, wood chips, branches and other leftovers from sawmills and loggers. European power companies are burning pellets in an attempt to cut carbon dioxide emissions, triggering demand.
The worldwide financial crisis crippled the borrowing ability of many businesses beginning last fall. Bolen said there's no date set for building to begin.
