Scrushy Strapped For Cash, Asks To Unfreeze Assets

Birmingham, AL – Jailed former HealthSouth Corp. chief executive Richard Scrushy is asking the court to allow him to sell assets to pay for household expenses and his family.

In a recent court filing, Scrushy asks that some of his assets be unfrozen to pay for expenses related to some of his eight children, other family members and his employees. His net worth, which is unknown, is under a court-ordered hold after HealthSouth shareholders won a $2.8 billion civil lawsuit against Scrushy last month.

An Alabama judge found the 56-year-old Selma native liable for leading a $2.6 billion fraud at HealthSouth from 1996 to 2002. Scrushy still maintains he knew nothing about it.
