Birmingham, AL – Jefferson County officials say the state's first confirmed death from swine flu has been reported in their county.
A man in his 50s died from the disease earlier this month in a Birmingham hospital. Dr. Elizabeth Turnipseed with the Jefferson County Department of Health said the man was not believed to be a county resident and he had other underlying health problems.
She said it is not a surprise that the state has had a death from the disease, which has continued to circulate in Alabama since April.
There were 547 confirmed cases statewide as of July 23, according to the state department of public health.
