Montgomery, AL – The Alabama Medicaid Agency says enrollment has grown by nearly 50,000 people, with the largest increase in the program most likely to include working families.
Agency spokeswoman Robin Rawls says agency officials believe the economy is probably behind the increase.
Rawls says enrollment in a Medicaid program for children, teens and pregnant women has jumped by 45,273 since October 2006.
Families that qualify for the program have incomes at or slightly above the poverty line.
Medicaid for Low Income Families, a health care program for families with extremely low income who have children at home, had an enollment increase of more than 3,500.
