Trial Set For Ala. Prison Lawsuit

Birmingham, AL – A trial date has been set for a lawsuit asking a federal court to order an end to what plaintiffs call dangerous and unconstitutional conditions at Donaldson Correctional Facility.

The trial has been set for the week of June 7, 2010 in Montgomery federal court before U.S. District Judge W. Keith Watkins.

The laswuit was filed in February by the Southern Center for Human Rights on behalf of a group of inmates.

Named as defendants in the suit are Donaldson warden Gary Hetzel, state Corrections Commissioner Richard Allen and Gov. Bob Riley.

In their response, attorneys for the defendants say they have taken reasonable, practical and largely successful steps to reduce the level of violence and improve conditions at the prison.
