Prison Officials Say They Will Release Barksdale Report

Montgomery, AL – State prison officials say they won't seek further court review and will release reports concerning inmate assaults and the death of a prisoner convicted of killing two Athens police officers.

Prisons spokesman Brian Corbett said Wednesday that attorneys assisting the corrections department recommended that prison officials not ask the Supreme Court to rehear the case. The court ruled Sept. 18 that the files are public records.

Corbett said department officials are setting up procedures to release the records, but they would not be made public Wednesday.

The Supreme Court ruled that corrections officials had to make public internal reports on inmate assaults at Donaldson Correctional Facility and from the probe of the death of inmate Farron Barksdale in 2007.
