Montgomery, AL – The number of state employees in Alabama has declined for the first time in five years.
The state comptroller's office reports there were 503 fewer state employees on Sept. 30 than at the same time a year ago.
Alabama's government employed 38,503 people at the end of fiscal 2009 on Sept. 30. That represented a declined of 1.3 percent from a year earlier.
A decline last occurred in fiscal 2004. That decrease and the recent one coincided with the state government experiencing financial problems.
