Tuscaloosa, AL – A new literacy project is aimed at boosting reading power in the Black Belt's public school libraries. Schools can apply to receive up to $1000 in free books. Alabama Public Radio's Brett Tannehill reports ...

Alabama public schools received no money this year to buy new books for their libraries. But dozens of free books sent for review to the University of Alabama will be given to at least five Black Belt schools to help cover the shortfall. Associate library sciences professor Jamie Naidoo is coordinating the Book Bonanza for the Black Belt. He says the goal is to provide libraries with fresh materials and stimulate a love of reading.

JAMIE1-If they have high quality books that are entertaining and that they're engaged with then they're going to want to read and want to learn how to read and they're going to find that book they really like and maybe come back for more books.

The books are meant for students from preschool to high school, and include picture books, informational non fiction and novels. Librarians in the Black Belt can apply for the book distribution by calling 205-348-1518. The winning schools will be selected by a drawing on December 2nd.
