Montgomery, AL – Veteran Republican state Sen. Larry Dixon of Montgomery says he will retire from the Legislature when his seventh term expires in November.
Dixon announced his retirement Wednesday in a news conference on the Senate floor. He said he made the decision after talking to family members, political advisers and friends. He said he decided it was time to retire after serving seven terms beginning in 1982. He served four years in the House before being elected to the Senate.
The 67-year-old Dixon was one of only four Republicans in the Alabama Senate when first elected. There are now 13.
He said he plans to continue his work as executive director of the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners.
