Montgomery, AL – The state school superintendent and the A Plus Education Partnership are joining the governor to encourage the Legislature to legalize charter schools in Alabama.
Gov. Bob Riley, State Superintendent of Education Joe Morton and A Plus President Caroline Novak held a news conference Monday to promote the legislation that will be introduced Tuesday by Republicans Sen. Steve French and Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin.
Riley says passage of the legislation would help Alabama qualify for an additional $200 million in federal education money. The legislation is opposed by the Alabama Education Association because charter schools aren't required to follow the state tenure law and some other educational laws.
