Montgomery, AL – An Alabama House committee has approved a campaign finance reform bill that would ban the practice of transferring campaign contributions from one political action committee to another.
Critics say the practice known as PAC-to-PAC transfers makes it difficult for the public to determine the source of money for political campaigns.
The House Constitution and Elections Committee approved the bill Wednesday by voice vote.
Democratic Rep. Jeff McLaughlin of Guntersville, has sponsored the bill for most of the more than 10 years he has been in the Legislature. Most years the bill has passed the House, but died in the Senate, often without coming up for a vote.
The bill now goes to the full House for debate.
