Birmingham, AL – A Birmingham nonprofit group that coordinates service projects on Martin Luther King Jr. Day expects as many as 2,000 people to donate their time Monday.
Hands On Birmingham director Candi Williams says participation in the group's annual day of service in honor of the fallen civil rights leader has increased significantly in recent years.
The number of volunteers especially shot up last year in Birmingham and nationwide after incoming President Barack Obama encouraged people to help out on the holiday.
She says in 2001, its first year locally, the group had about 300 people help with 15 projects.
Now she says the group expects thousands of volunteers on more than 40 projects.
