Montgomery, Alabama – The Alabama House has approved an election reform bill that would ban candidates from transferring campaign donations from one political action committee to another.
The sponsor, Democratic Rep. Jeff McLaughlin of Guntersville, said by transferring campaign donations from PAC to PAC candidates can hide the original source of the campaign contributions.
The House voted 101-0 Tuesday to pass the bill with no exceptions. The bill has passed the House by mostly unanimous votes for most of the past 10 years.
Most years it has died in the Senate without coming up for a vote.
Several legislators suggested amending the bill to limit the amount of campaign contributions. McLaughlin said he personally would like to limit all campaign contributions, but that would make it harder to pass the bill.
