Ala. Sen. Committee Approves Bill To Stop Bingo Probe

Montgomery, AL – An Alabama Senate committee has voted along party lines to approve a bill that would stop the Governor's Task Force on Illegal Gambling.

The bill by Democratic Sen. Bobby Singleton of Greensboro cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee on a 7-3 vote Wednesday. It now goes to the Senate.

Singleton's bill would take away the governor's power to initiate criminal investigations. The governor's policy director, Bryan Taylor, said it's designed to stop the task force's crackdown on illegal gambling.

The Alabama District Attorneys Association opposed the bill and said it would have an impact much more than the gambling issue.
