House Passes Bill To Encourage Hiring Unemployed

Montgomery, AL – The Alabama House has passed a bill sponsored by a Republican candidate for governor that's designed to get state residents off of unemployment rolls.

The House voted 102-0 for the bill by Rep. Robert Bentley of Tuscaloosa that would give employers a tax deduction if they hire a person who is currently unemployed and keep that person working for at least a year. The deduction would be equal to 50 percent of the employee's salary. Bentley says the bill is designed to reward employers who pay good salaries and hire full-time workers.

Bentley says his bill would create ``good jobs.'' Bentley is a Tuscaloosa physician who is seeking the GOP nomination for governor.

The bill now goes to the Senate for debate.
