Feds: Ex-Birmingham Mayor Should Get 24-Year Sentence

By Associated Press

Birmingham, AL – Federal prosecutors are recommending that ousted Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford be sentenced to at least 24 years and three months in prison for his conviction in a bribery and corruption case.

The recommendation filed Wednesday came as a news report on Langford's tax records for a recent three-year period showed he won 555 jackpots worth $1.5 million at the VictoryLand casino in Macon County. Langford says he doesn't remember winning so many jackpots.

Langford is to be sentenced Friday in federal court in Tuscaloosa for his conviction on charges of receiving bribes from an investment banker.

Prosecutors said the 63-year-old Langford should be sentenced to at least 24 years and three months and as long as 30 years and four months, plus be ordered to pay nearly $362,000 in back taxes and forfeitures.
