House Debate on Education Budget Begins Today

By Associated Press

Montgomery, AL – The Alabama House is set to debate a proposed $5.48 billion education budget that protects most teachers' jobs.

The education budget and related appropriations bills are on the work agenda in the House for Tuesday. House Speaker Seth Hammett has said he hopes to pass the budget in one day.

The recession-year budget protects jobs of state funded teachers. But education officials have said teachers positions funded by local school boards could be in jeopardy.

The budget provides no money for teacher supplies.
