Visitors To Tour Expanded $80 Million Ala. Jail

Huntsville, AL – Taxpayers will get a chance to see how their money was spent when Madison County Sheriff Blake Dorning hosts an open house for the county's $80 million jail expansion.

The open house follows a ribbon cutting at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Construction on the city-county jail in 2003. Cracks were discovered in a support beam, leading the city to dismiss the original builder, and the city of Huntsville is suing Gadsden-based Dawson Building Contractors in to try to recover some of the more than $50 million in cost overruns.

Lee Builders finished the jail last September.

Dorning said he hopes to begin transferring inmates later this month and eventually close the county's older jail annex.
