Montgomery, AL – Attorney General Troy King says the man who appointed him to the job, Gov. Bob Riley, endorsed his opponent because King refused to submit to the governor's control.
King criticized Riley on Friday after Riley praised Republican attorney general candidate Luther Strange in a campaign flier. A spokesman for Riley says the governor and Alabama's two U.S. senators have endorsed Strange because King wouldn't enforce the law.
King said Riley appointed him in 2004 and then asked him to issue legal opinions to support Riley's political positions even when they were wrong. King said he refused and that started problems between the two. He said Strange has pledged to do the governor's bidding.
Strange said King's statement makes no sense because Riley won't be governor when the next attorney general's term begins.
