Montgomery, AL – Robert Bentley is holding on to his second-place finish over Tim James as all but five Alabama's 67 counties have completed their recount from the Republican primary for governor.
Party spokesmen Philip Bryan said Thursday its tally shows Bentley leading James by more than 200 votes. The exact amount is in dispute because ballots could not be found for one polling place in Mobile County and they haven't been recounted.
Bentley led James by 167 votes in the June 1 primary to claim a spot in the runoff against first-place finisher Bradley Byrne.
Byran says the five counties remaining - Bullock, Clarke, Franklin, Pickens and Greene - don't have big numbers of GOP votes. Pickens and Greene won't begin recounting until Friday, but it appears James has few opportunities to overtake Bentley.
