Ala. SBOE Considers Change To 2-Year Ethics Rule

Montgomery, AL – The state school board is considering changes that would somewhat soften the ethics policy for two-year college employees established under the system's former chancellor, Bradley Byrne.

The board discussed at a work session Thursday amending a rule that says two-year college system employees can only receive $25 a year from a vendor or lobbyist. Board members are considering a policy to change that to $50 a day, with supporters saying it is needed for those attending a conference or meeting.

Board vice president Randy McKinney of Gulf Shores said the initial rule was too restrictive and the change would not weaken the overall ethics policy.

But board members Stephanie Bell of Montgomery and Betty Peters of Dothan said they would probably vote against the change.
