Opelika, AL – A jury is to be selected Friday for the capital murder trial of a man accused of killing an Auburn University student from Georgia.
Defense and prosecuting attorneys finished questioning prospective jurors Thursday afternoon in Opelika. Circuit Judge Jacob Walker said the jury couldn't be selected at that point because one potential juror had left during a break. He said the jury will be selected Friday morning and opening statements will begin.
The jury will decide the fate of 26-year-old Courtney Lockhart of Smith Station. He's accused of kidnapping, robbing and shooting an 18-year-old freshman, Lauren Burk, of Marietta, Ga., in 2008. Her family and Lockhart's mother were in the courtroom Thursday afternoon in hopes of watching the jury selection.
