Officer Says AU Slaying Suspect Apologized After Chase

Opelika, AL – A Phenix City police officer says the Iraq War veteran on trial for killing an Auburn University freshman from Georgia apologized when he was arrested after a high speed chase.

Officer Darryl Williams testified Monday that Courtney Lockhart told police he had ``tried to get help'' after returning home from Iraq.

Lockhart is on trial for capital murder in the abduction and killing of 18-year-old Lauren Burk of Marietta, Ga.

Williams said Lockhart made the statement when he was arrested in Phenix City a week after the kidnapping and shooting of Burk. Williams said Lockhart led police on a high-speed chase for two or three miles before colliding with a police motorcycle. He was arrested after running into a wooded area.
