Ala. House GOP Picks Gaston For No. 2 Spot

Tuscaloosa, AL – State Rep. Victor Gaston of Mobile is the choice of the new Republican majority in the Alabama House of Representatives to hold the number two spot of speaker pro tem.

The Republican caucus nominated him Tuesday during a meeting in Tuscaloosa and plan to make it official with a vote of the House at the start of a special session Wednesday.

The 67-year-old Gaston was elected to the House in 1982. He was one of eight Republicans back then in the Democrat-dominated House and is the only one left from that year. Gaston said it's breathtaking to have seen the Republican Party go from a small group in the 105-member House to holding 66 seats.

Republicans earlier nominated Rep. Mike Hubbard of Auburn to be the speaker of the House.
