Joe Turnham Stepping Down As Ala.'s Top Democrat

Montgomery, AL – State Democratic Party Chairman Joe Turnham will step down Jan. 19 and the State Democratic Executive Committee will meet in Montgtomery to elect a new chairman.

Turnham said Thursday he's tired after serving as chairman since 2005 and the party needs fresh leadership.

So far, former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Mark Kennedy is the only person who has expressed interest publicly in heading the party. Turnham says Kennedy is a good speaker and motivator and would make an outstanding chairman.

The state Republican Party is also changing its chairman. The State Republican Executive Committee meets Feb. 19 to elect a successor to state Rep. Mike Hubbard of Auburn.
