Vote rejecting alcohol in Ala. town gets OK

Rogersville, AL – A judge has upheld the narrow rejection of alcohol sales by voters in Rogersville.

The referendum initially failed 219-218, but town officials contested the results after determining a few individuals who cast votes lived outside town limits.

After the votes by non-residents were tossed out, Lauderdale County Circuit Court Judge Mike Jones ruled Wednesday the referendum failed by a count of 215-214 and ordered the results certified.

At the hearing Dec. 20, town attorney Jim Stanphill said an investigation by city officials revealed six voters living outside the city had inadvertently participated in the referendum.

Mayor Richard Herston, who contested the results, says he is satisfied with the ruling.
