Alabama Inaugural Includes Events Honoring King

Montgomery, AL – The holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr. shared the stage with the inauguration of Alabama's new Republican Gov. Robert Bentley.

It was a scene that King envisioned, but one that state Rep. John Knight says was hard to imagine in Alabama not too many years ago.

Speaking to a crowd of mostly white Republicans at the inauguration, Knight pointed out that ceremony was held near the site of the old slave markets in downtown Montgomery. Knight and state Rep. Alvin Holmes made presentations honoring King just minutes before Bentley took the oath of office.

Other King holiday activities scheduled Monday included a memorial service at the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church near the Capitol and a traditional mass meeting at Lilly Baptist Church.
