Montgomery, AL – Gov. Robert Bentley has ordered an across-the-board cut of 3 percent in the state education budget and announced that he will cut most agencies in the state General Fund budget 15 percent after working with the Legislature to protect some essential services.
Bentley said Monday the education budget has a $165 million shortfall and the General Fund budget for non-education agencies is $110 million short. He said proration is necessary to balance the budgets.
The governor said the cuts in the education budget are effective immediately. The proration of the General Fund budget will depend on action by the Legislature to protect some essential services.
