Morton Says Ala. Schools Facing 'Perilous Times'

Montgomery, AL – State schools Superintendent Joe Morton says local school systems were warned in advance that their budgets might be cut before the end of the current fiscal year.

But Morton said the 3 percent across-the-board cuts to the education budget announced Monday by Gov. Robert Bentley might mean that more school systems will have to borrow money to keep classrooms open until the fiscal year ends on Sept. 30.

He warned in an e-mail to The Associated Press that the budget cuts could move some school systems closer to ``the brink of insolvency.'' He said Alabama schools are facing ``perilous times.''

Morton said he was glad that Bentley announced the budget cuts now rather than waiting until closer to the end of the fiscal year.
